The move to cut backdating of pension credit to three months will save the Treasury an estimated £100 million in 20 as well as well as savings of £35 million in 2009 and £70 million in 2010 because of the reductions in housing benefit and council tax benefit.

But the Department for Work and Pensions maintains that the savings will be used to streamline the application processes for these benefits to produce a higher take-up rate.

An estimated 5 million pensioners are eligible for pension credit, a means tested benefit which tops up those on low incomes to £124.05 a week for single pensioners or £189.35 a week for couples, but because of the complex application procedures many do not claim.

Age Concern says that some six out of 10 pensioners are not claiming because of the complexity of making an application and the necessity to answer intrusive questions aimed at means-testing pensioners.

Mike Harrison, a partner in the Landed Estates Group of UK top 20 Chartered Accountant Saffery Champness, says: “These incidents show an absolute reversal of the rules.

Also HMRC appears to be engaging direct with property investors rather than through their appointed tax agents, or copying those agents in, with the consequence that those who feel most threatened or least equipped to dispute the demand are paying up.

If people have a problem with the service or are confused as to how to claim credits- pm me.

I can only show you the door Neo you have to walk through.

You're going to need to know what credits you are entitled to claim.
